What to Do If Your Garage Door Spring Breaks
By Nexus Garage Doors ·
A sudden bang followed by a door that will not lift can point to a broken garage door spring. You may also notice the opener straining or the door stopping after moving only a short distance. Those symptoms need an assessment; they are not a reason to keep testing the motor.
Stop using the door
Stop cycling the opener and keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the door. Do not pull an emergency release, attempt to lift an unusually heavy door or stand beneath an unstable door to investigate. A partly open or crooked door needs particular care: leave it alone and arrange professional help.
Springs and associated lift hardware can be under substantial tension. Do not loosen spring brackets, adjust cables or try to wind or unwind a spring yourself. The immediate goal is to keep the situation stable until the door can be assessed.
Tell us what happened and where the door stopped
- Did you hear a bang, grinding or another new sound?
- Is the door closed, partly open or uneven?
- Is a car trapped inside?
- Do you see a loose cable or obvious damage from a safe distance?
- What is your service ZIP code and best contact number?
Photograph the whole door only if you can do so safely from ground level. You do not need to climb, touch the mechanism or identify a spring size before calling.
What the assessment should establish
The technician checks the door and lift system before recommending the repair. A working opener motor does not rule out a spring or cable problem. Conversely, not every stuck door has the same fault. Read why an opener can struggle when the door is out of balance.
For spring replacement, matching the spring setup to the installed door matters. We explain this in our door-weighing guide.
Ask about scope, availability and warranty
See Nexus spring replacement starting prices, the tune-up offer and warranty details. Same-day and next-day appointments depend on availability; tell us if the vehicle is trapped when you call. An online request is a request for follow-up, not a confirmed arrival time.
We serve New Port Richey, Trinity, Odessa and nearby communities. If you are unsure whether your address is covered, call with your location and we will confirm availability.
